Homeowners are gravitating toward spaces that feel grounded and lived-in, with rich wood tones, stone, plaster finishes, and color palettes that lean earthy rather than stark. Think deep greens, warm browns, clay, burgundy, and layered neutrals that have some depth to them.
Benjamin Moore's 2026 palette centers on dusty, organic hues, and Sherwin-Williams named Universal Khaki their Color of the Year, a warm neutral that looks genuinely inviting on a full wall rather than just safe.
Zillow found that color drenching, painting the walls, trim, and ceiling all the same tone, showed up 149% more often in listing descriptions this year.
Spaces are starting to look like the people who live in them
There was a long stretch where the dominant decorating advice was essentially: keep it neutral, keep it simple, think about resale. A lot of people followed that advice and ended up with homes that looked fine but didn't feel like theirs. That's changing.
Vintage pieces, patterned tile, wallpaper, collected objects, and sculptural lighting are showing up more, and Zillow's listing data backs that up with rising mentions of artisan craftsmanship and curated, personal decor. Pinterest's 2026 home predictions lean expressive across the board. None of this means everyone is suddenly decorating with abandon. It means the pressure to keep everything generic and inoffensive has loosened, and people are making choices that reflect how they live and what they like.
Kitchens are getting more functional, not just prettier
The kitchen conversation used to be almost entirely about aesthetics: countertops, cabinet fronts, backsplash tile. Those things still matter, but what homeowners are really investing in now is storage and organization. Built-in pantry cabinets, beverage stations, appliances that tuck behind panels, hidden charging drawers.

Zillow also found reading nooks showing up 48% more in listings this year. Natural light, outdoor views, and dedicated quiet spaces are being treated as real design priorities rather than nice-to-haves, which says a lot about what people are actually looking for when they imagine being home.
Outdoor spaces are finally being taken seriously
Houzz has been tracking the rise of what they call "garden rooms", or outdoor areas divided into distinct zones for dining, lounging, gathering around a fire, and planting a garden. The idea is that outdoor space works better when it's given the same intentionality as the rooms inside. Consider creating a dedicated seating area, some ambient lighting, a spot for a fire. It doesn't have to be a major project to make a backyard or patio feel like somewhere you want to be.
Homes are being designed to last longer
Houzz found that 66% of homeowners factor in accessibility when they remodel bathrooms, most commonly through curbless showers and grab bars.
But the broader pattern is about flexibility, including single-level layouts, rooms that can serve different purposes as the household changes, storage that's reachable, materials chosen because they hold up rather than because they're on trend. People are thinking further out when they make design decisions, and it's showing up in what they prioritize when they renovate.
The design choices getting the most attention right now share a common quality: they make a home better to actually be in. Not just better to look at, not optimized for resale, just genuinely more comfortable and personal. That's a meaningful shift from where things were five or ten years ago.
